CCTV theatre @ Hebbel am Ufer

CCTV theatre

Two weeks prior to the G-8 summit in Germany - academicians, theorists, artists, media practitioners, activists and unionists gathered together in Berlin for Summit: Non-aligned initiatives in education culture.

For four days in May the Hebbel theatre in Kreuzberg Berlin played host to close to 60 sessions, panels, working groups and caucuses of the Summit.

ChitraKarKhana set up a CCTV architecture in the theatre building. We used the existing camera mounted in the sound console that framed the stage (and was viewed mostly by actors backstage to follow cues). 2 low-light cameras framed the span of chairs and audience in tier 1 and tier 2. A camera was added in the foyer and one overlooking the cafe and bar on tier 2, where a lot of parallel workshops and talks were happening.

A quad of these views was projected on a 45 foot screen in the theatre and also on the 20 foot screen in the bar. A TV monitor near the registration desk in the foyer and 2 near the coat racks on level 1 and 2 completed the feedback loop.

CCTV theatre provided an open viewing and monitoring of the several parallel activities and events in the HAU. It was also partly a provocation, allowing people to intervene into the other physical spaces and the main stage events.
