BETA DAYS AND BETTER NIGHTS ...
by Shaina Anand and Shai Heredia. June 1999.
The authors were awarded a Majlis fellowship 1999 to write about their experience as assistant directors on a 5-month road trip through India while working on "A tryst with the people of India" a 15-part docu series under the direction of Saeed Akhtar Mirza. A 17-member crew burrowed their way through the length and breadth of India shooting for this project.
The 'book' as a finite whole was never completed. Chronologically the essays reach about halfway through the journey, at which point for various reasons the text could not proceed. This is a contrapuntal account written in diary form between Shai and Shaina. Part diaristic travelogue, part oral record with transcriptions of interviews shot for the film, the writing, apart from being a chrnonicle of voices is cumulatively a questioning and critique of documentary practice.
Excerpts are below: SH and SA denote distinct entries by the two writers.
